The framework consists of six questions. (1) Source of yield: who pays the 12 percent, from what economic activity? If it cannot be explained, doubt its sustainability. (2) Custody and failure: who holds the assets, how are they treated legally if the operator goes bankrupt, and is there segregation or insurance? (3) Regulation and jurisdiction: with which authority in which country is it registered, and can you verify this in a public register? (4) Liquidity and exit: can you withdraw at any time, what limits or fees apply, and what happens if many people withdraw at once? (5) Transparency and track record: are the operators identified, audited, and are asset reserves disclosed? (6) Your own conditions: could you lose this entire amount without harming your life and goals, and why do you want it now, whether from impatience, envy of others' gains, or obligation to the person recommending it? If any question lacks a clear answer, limit the amount to zero or to what you can afford to lose. A friend's goodwill and a product's soundness are separate matters, and you should check whether the referrer earns a commission.
New financial services occupy a space where genuine innovation, speculative mania, and sometimes fraud coexist, so a reusable framework matters more than judgments about individual product names. The questions here attempt to recreate, in unregulated territory, the protections that traditional financial regulation institutionalized over decades: deposit insurance, segregation of client assets, disclosure obligations, and suitability rules. Historically, many new services promising high yields do pay out at first, which builds trust, and later entrants absorb the losses, a pattern running from Ponzi in the 1920s through Madoff in 2008 to several crypto lending failures in 2022. A five-minute sign-up may also hint that protective friction such as identity and suitability checks has been skipped. Recommendations from friends are frequently exploited in what is called affinity fraud, because trust dulls judgment. A strong answer neither rejects nor embraces the product but uses systematic questions to clarify the limits of one's understanding and sizes any commitment accordingly.
Answering all six questions takes time and knowledge, and most people drift toward either trusting the friend to avoid effort or avoiding everything for the same reason. Even when disclosures or audit reports exist, laypeople struggle to judge their authenticity and adequacy, and superficial checks can create false comfort.
Adopt the principle of never investing in what you lack time to research, and ring-fence a small experimental allocation, say no more than 5 percent of financial assets, within which alone you try new services. Actually depositing and withdrawing a small amount within that allocation teaches more than any document.
