In the deepening-dependence scenario, more people cannot write or decide without AI, fail to notice its errors, and thinking becomes homogenized. In the extension scenario, those who redirect the time and attention freed from routine work into deep thinking, creation, and dialogue achieve more. What separates the two is whether the scope of delegation is chosen consciously. My policy: for work tied to the core of my judgment and expertise, such as forming my own opinions, reasoning through important decisions, and solving fundamental problems in my field, do it myself first and then use AI to check; delegate routine, repetitive work such as formatting, gathering background, and summarizing, and spend the freed time thinking; set aside time weekly to write, calculate, and speak from memory without AI to confirm my abilities remain; whenever I receive AI output, generate at least one counterargument or alternative myself before adopting it; and every six months review what I can no longer do without AI and pull back delegation where needed.
Cognitive offloading, as Andy Clark and David Chalmers's 'extended mind' argument suggests, extends what humans have always done with tools such as writing, calculators, and maps. The issue is not delegation itself but whether the standards for judging things yourself are lost as a result. Nicholas Carr's 'The Shallows' discussed the effect of search engines on deep reading, and research has reported effects of GPS reliance on spatial cognition. At the same time, letting go of some mental arithmetic and memorization has allowed people to direct attention to higher-order problems. In both the optimistic and pessimistic scenarios, drawing your own boundary, training core judgment yourself while delegating peripheral tasks, and reviewing it regularly is the key to turning dependence into extension. This policy is consistent with Anders Ericsson's research on deliberate practice and rests on the premise that abilities not used are not maintained.
The boundary between core and peripheral shifts by occupation and over time, and you may not draw it correctly on your own. AI-free time is inefficient in the short term and is the first thing cut under deadline pressure. In environments where everyone relies fully on AI, taking extra time yourself may go unrecognized, creating social pressure against maintaining the policy.
Do not set the boundary alone; discuss with peers or mentors in your field which abilities must not be lost in your profession, which sharpens the line. Fix AI-free time in small units, such as thirty minutes a week, on your calendar so it is harder to cut. At work, create a forum for sharing cases where someone caught an AI error, which helps the organization recognize the value of time spent thinking for yourself.
