The core of the process is sharing the question of what we would do if something happened, rather than making predictions. Sample agenda: first, a review of household finances (emergency fund, debt, insurance, currency and regional diversification of assets). Second, about three scenarios, income halving, serious illness or caregiving, and disaster or economic decline in the local area, with the first steps and who does what for each. Third, plans for housing and location over the coming years, and the outlook for children's education and parents' care. Fourth, each person's plans for investing in skills and health. Fifth, confirming and updating the location of key documents, account information, and emergency contacts. Process matters: no blame, everyone speaks, decisions are written down briefly, and the plan is reviewed the following year. Always include optimistic topics such as goals, travel, and things to learn, so that preparation is tied to positive plans.
A family is both an economic unit and the first unit of mutual support in a crisis. Yet many families have no habit of discussing finances or future risks; one person may hold all the information, or members may operate on different assumptions. Talking only once a crisis hits invites emotional conflict and poorly informed decisions. For the same reasons that companies conduct scenario planning and continuity planning in calm times, families benefit from dialogue in calm times. The value lies not in predicting a specific scenario but in building the habit and trust of thinking and acting together in the face of change. Psychological research indicates that open family conversation about difficulties also contributes to children's resilience. An annual frequency is realistic because the burden is low and continuity is easier. Linking preparation to future enjoyment keeps the meeting from becoming a gloomy exercise and is key to sustaining it.
In many cultures and relationships, discussing finances or the future within the family meets resistance, and money can be taboo between generations, especially parents and adult children. If one person leads, others may feel managed, and surfacing disagreements can strain relationships. Without follow-through, the meeting becomes an empty ritual.
Begin not with the full picture but with one concrete item, such as confirming emergency contacts or reviewing insurance, to build the habit with minimal resistance. Rotate the facilitator role and base decisions on consensus. End each meeting by agreeing on one action per person for the coming year and open the next meeting by reviewing them. Pair the meeting with a meal or outing to establish it as an enjoyable tradition.
